Angelenos to Help Plant the Seeds of a Forest That Will Rise in the Heart of Downtown L.A. at Gloria Molina Grand Park

Saturday, January 31, 2026, 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

WHAT:
Miyawaki Forest at Gloria Molina Grand Park
In an historic environmental milestone for DTLA, Gloria Molina Grand Park becomes the home of L.A.’s first Miyawaki Forest to grow in a fully urban setting—planted by the community for the community. The future forest is designed to grow 10 times faster and 30 times denser than traditional planting; it will also restore biodiversity and capture carbon in the heart of the city. To create the Miyawaki Forest, Angelenos of all ages will break ground and plant 200 plants within a 650-square-foot piece of land located in the park’s Block Two, located between the park’s Olive Court and Hill Street, north of the Performance Lawn.

The family-friendly gardening adventure will be preceded by an Opening Ceremony featuring a Land Acknowledgement and Guest Elder Mary Lee Jones from the Yakama Reservation of Central Washington, along with a Land Blessing performed by Aztec dance troupe Yankuititl. Guests will also experience a Partner Village with free planting demonstrations, a seedball-making workshop and native plant giveaways.

The Miyawaki Forest is a globally recognized ecosystem in which forests are created using the Miyawaki Method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. He emphasized planting a species of native trees in an extremely dense area, which will work together to create a biodiverse and multi-layered forest community.
