Free Tours for Kids Take Center Stage at The Music Center's Walt Disney Concert Hall

On the first day of each month, The Music Center's volunteer docents (known as the Symphonians) provide to young Angelenos and their families a free, magical, behind-the-scenes tour of one of the world's most iconic venues.

Major changes are in store for the 67^th annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration! For the first time in its history, the Emmy Award®-winning live show will not take place on Christmas Eve; instead, it will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2026, at the traditional location: The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The free, highly popular holiday spectacular also will expand from one show to two identical 90-minute performances, which will take place at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., allowing even more Angelenos and visitors to enjoy the live experience. One of Los Angeles’ most anticipated holiday experiences, the free celebration fills the stage with music, dance and cultural traditions featuring performers from across the region, spotlighting the extraordinary artistic richness of L.A. County and reinforcing our community connectedness.

The L.A. County Holiday Celebration is an invitation for Angelenos of all ages to come together with two opportunities to experience a joyous lineup of performances. This year’s participating ensembles and artists offer an eclectic mix of Mexican folklórico, gospel, mariachi, klezmer, Filipino traditional, Indian classical, contemporary South Asian repertoire and more. The live performances will be taped and then broadcast as one program on PBS SoCal on Thursday, December 24, 2026, at 3 p.m., with an encore airing later that day on PBS SoCal at 8 p.m. as well as on Friday, December 25, 2026, at 8 p.m. PBS SoCal Plus will air encores of the program on Saturday, December 25, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The L.A. County Holiday Celebration also will be available to stream, beginning December 24, 2026, at 3 p.m., on the free PBS app.

Returning favorites include chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot, youth ensemble Harmonic Bronze, Mexican folklórico ensemble Pacifico Dance Company, and contemporary youth ensemble Yaya Dance Academy.

New to the show this year are Aara Ensemble exploring South Asian musical traditions; Armenian adult vocal group AGBU LA Choir; youth-focused, multidisciplinary dance academy Art Dance Academy; gospel group Dr. Quincy D. Fielding, Jr.’s GRACE Choir; mariachi ensemble Julian Torres y Mariachi Cenzontle; Filipino American performing arts group Malaya Filipino American Dance Arts; Indian classical and contemporary dance company Shakti Dance Company; and UCLA Klezmer Ensemble, a student group celebrating the spirited musical traditions of klezmer.

The L.A. County Holiday Celebration is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and presented by The Music Center. Audiences can enjoy the celebration in person at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, by watching it on PBS SoCal and PBS SoCal Plus or by streaming it online at pbssocal.org, holidaycelebration.org or on the free PBS App.

General admission to the in-person event is free; however, guests are encouraged to reserve their advance tickets to guarantee seating. Tickets will be released daily at 10:00 a.m. from December 8 to December 10, 2026. Doors to the L.A. County Holiday Celebration will open at 9:40 a.m. for the 11 a.m. performance and 1:40 p.m. for the 3 p.m. performance; there will also be a standby line for anyone without an advance ticket, but who is interested in attending. Advance ticket holders arriving after 10:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., respectively, will relinquish their reserved seats and be directed to the standby line.

Angelenos Invited to Become Shapeshifting Beasts from Korean Folklore in Free Participatory Installation "The Music Center Presents BEASTS"

WHAT:
The Music Center invites Angelenos and visitors of all ages to step into its Digital Arts Space on Jerry Moss Plaza to encounter and become “gwoemul,” shapeshifting beasts from Korean folklore, in The Music Center Presents BEASTS. This one-of-a-kind participatory installation, created by Los Angeles-based artists Scarlett Kim and Anthony Storniolo, teleports participants to a retro-futuristic world suspended between Seoul and Los Angeles, where mythology, memory and possibility converge.

Participants first choose the beast that calls to them. Using their bodies and movements, they step into the beast’s story and help shape its fate. They might play hide-and-seek with a slug, dance among a rat-human horde or explore a surreal underwater subway station.

The Music Center Presents BEASTS is a self-guided experience designed to be explored at participants’ own pace. They can follow one beast—or all of them. They can jump in and play, or simply watch the worlds unfold around them.

The Music Center Presents BEASTS is the latest free public art installation presented by The Music Center’s Digital Innovation Initiative (DII), designed to explore and create digital and immersive experiences that bridge technology and the arts.

The Music Center's Pioneering Community Impact Report™ Demonstrates How Arts Programming Influences Audiences' Wellbeing, Creativity and Sense of Belonging — and Sets a Standard in The Performing Arts Industry

The arts are doing more than bringing Angelenos together—they are helping people feel better, more connected and more inspired, according to The Music Center’s unprecedented first annual Community Impact Report™. With data collected from audience members and visitors between July 2024 – June 2025, Understanding Impact in the Arts: The Music Center Community Impact Report™ details the direct outcomes of public programs presented for Los Angeles residents and visitors by TMC Arts, The Music Center’s programming division.

In 2019, The Music Center embarked on the first-of-its-kind process to measure the social impact of its numerous public programs, including both paid-ticketed and free performances and experiences. The work culminated in The Music Center inaugural Community Impact Report™, providing the most comprehensive assessment to date of how TMC Arts’ year-round programs benefit the many communities the organization serves in Los Angeles County. More than 5,000 people responded to the surveys from the 416,638 people who participated in TMC Arts programs in 2024 – 2025; more than one-fifth (21%) of those who participated in these programs were first-time visitors to L.A.’s performing arts center. Approximately 86% of them attended a free program.

Special social impact findings about participants’ experiences include:

93% said they felt they could be themselves at The Music Center;
90% believed the programs fostered a sense of community;
89% said the programs encouraged social interaction;
89% indicated they expressed themselves creatively at a participatory program;
87% felt their overall wellbeing improved; and
78% felt creative or creatively inspired.

“These findings overwhelmingly support what we, at The Music Center, have long believed: the arts make people’s lives better. They offer joy, combat loneliness, strengthen wellbeing and create the connections that help communities thrive,” said Rachel S. Moore, president & CEO of The Music Center. “We developed this evaluation methodology not only to attempt to validate that theory, but also to gauge the quality of the experiences we are offering Angelenos and to assess our progress towards achieving our vision to deepen their cultural lives. We are committed to using what we learn from this assessment to help ensure our programs are even more relevant and impactful for all people of Los Angeles County.”

The 45-page report also details the demographics of the audiences TMC Arts programming reached and what steps the organization is taking to expand and further diversify its audiences. For example, while traditional dance performances nationally have often struggled with inclusivity because audiences do not always reflect the diversity of the communities these performances aim to serve, TMC Arts has made an intentional effort to present more culturally diverse dance companies and dance forms as part of its Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center series. As a result, TMC Arts discovered in its surveys that 17% of dance attendees identified as Black or African American—more than double the share (7.6%) of Black or African American residents living in Los Angeles County. The Music Center welcomed even higher rates of Black or African American audience members for dance engagements performed by predominantly Black and African American dance companies; more than 38% of the audience members for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and nearly a quarter (23.7%) of audiences for Urban Bush Women identified as Black or African American.

Another notable statistic from the report: the surveys collectively show that Music Center’s public programs (independent of school-based programs) serve more older adults, aged 55 and over, compared to Los Angeles County’s total population. Approximately 15% of adults, aged 55 to 64, live in the county, yet more than 20% of them visited The Music Center. Nearly 17% of guests surveyed were between 65 and 74 years old, whereas only 11% of the county’s population represent the same age range—a significant 6% difference. On the other end of the spectrum, surveys show that some programs serve higher levels of younger Angelenos and visitors.

Despite the impact of TMC Arts programming, the report offers a candid assessment of how The Music Center can improve and fulfill its mission to “champion the arts in Los Angeles County people” and “embrace audiences, participants, visitors and community members from all backgrounds.” With nearly half of the 10 million residents in Los Angeles identifying as Latino, Hispanic or under 35 years old, the report prompts TMC Arts to create deeper engagement with those sectors, particularly at a time when younger generations are shaping the region’s cultural future. Additionally, TMC Arts will strive to boost participation by residents who live in Supervisorial District 4, including Torrance, Long Beach and the South Bay.

The report also shares The Music Center’s internal impact-measurement method known as TMC Arts’ Theory of Change. Launched in 2024, the Theory of Change serves as a visual roadmap to help the organization examine how its programming translates into outcomes for participants and the communities The Music Center aims to serve. TMC Arts collects and incorporates the data into an ongoing cycle of measurement, reflection (“debriefs”) and program adjustments.

“Impact measurement is ultimately about accountability,” said Julia Diamond, senior vice president of TMC Arts. “As the steward of a Los Angeles County facility, we have a responsibility to understand whom we are reaching, how people experience our programs and where we need to evolve. We are proud of the progress reflected in this report, and we are equally committed to using what we learn to reach more Angelenos because the arts should reflect and respond to L.A.’s rich diversity. When we bring more diverse voices, cultures and experiences to our stages, theatres and outdoor spaces, we create more opportunities for our guests to experience joy and feel they belong here. We believe this sense of belonging is a cornerstone of our individual and community wellbeing.”

The report’s findings include attendance and participation data. Surveys were collected through QR codes, email and onsite at events and performances.

Gloria Molina Grand Park invites Angelenos and visitors of all ages to Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos, an annual free Mexican celebration honoring departed loved ones through art, music, storytelling and cultural traditions. The 10-day festivity will be centered on the park’s programming theme for 2026 “The Power of One — It Starts with One. One Becomes Many,” which explores how individual stories and memories become part of the collective history of a community.

The celebration features public art installations, curated by renowned artist and Día de los Muertos educator Consuelo G. Flores. She and other L.A. artists, families and community organizations will create more than 16 altars (ofrendas) displayed throughout the park for everyone. This year’s program also introduces the inaugural Downtown Día de los Muertos mentorship program, bringing together emerging artists with seasoned professionals to learn about the cultural traditions and artistic best practices of altar-making. Eight mentees will create personalized shoebox altars that will become part of the park’s larger community altar.

Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos kicks off with an Opening Day Celebration on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., as part of the 10^th annual Grand Ave Arts: All Access. Hosted by composer, vocalist and educator Anaís Azul, the Opening Day Celebration will feature live music and cultural performances by El Río, Mariachi Arcoiris and Grupo Bella. Local youth from A Place Called Home will create artworks that will adorn the park’s performance stage, and Ohtli Yollotl Curanderismo Collective will offer traditional spiritual cleanses. Hands-on activities for all ages include sugar-skull decorating, face painting, a paper weaving workshop, a photography portrait session and more.

Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos culminates with Noche de los Muertos Closing Night Ceremony on Sunday, November 1, 2026, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature live music, cultural performances and family-friendly activities, including sugar-skull decorating, face painting, a vendor market and other interactive arts experiences. Los Negrete Fam and other guest artists will perform.

The Music Center Tours

The Music Center offers two types of free tours of its theatres and campus throughout the year led by volunteer Music Center docents, the Symphonians. A 90-minute tour encompasses The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Walt Disney Concert Hall along with Jerry Moss Plaza. Docents share details of each theatre’s history and architecture, while highlighting the many pieces of artworks, sculptures, tapestries, paintings and antiques from across the globe—some dating back to the 17^th century. Guests obtain an insider perspective on the history of the campus and Downtown L.A. through shared stories collected throughout The Music Center’s 60+ years as the heart of Los Angeles County’s cultural life. The free tours begin in the Grand Lobby of Walt Disney Concert Hall.

New this fall, The Music Center introduces a 45-minute tour designed just for kids ages 5–9 and their families to explore The Music Center’s iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall inside and out. From shiny, curved walls and architectural columns shaped like trees to a giant organ that looks like French fries and a secret garden, youngsters and their parents will discover what makes this one-of-a-kind building so special! Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos
Gloria Molina Grand Park between Grand Ave. and Hill St.

Visitors to Gloria Molina Grand Park can experience the vibrant, sacred tradition of Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Open to all, Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Dia de los Muertos is a 10-day free exhibition, featuring stunning altars created by local artists and community organizations, along with family-friendly activities. The opening ceremony takes place on Saturday, October 24, 2026; Noche de los Muertos, which showcases the role of light as a guide for ancestors using candlelight, lanterns and glowing altars, occurs on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Both celebrations feature music and dance. Altars are available for public viewing throughout the 10-day celebration.

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola). Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received two Tony Awards® including Best Direction of a Play, Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. The global piano star returns to The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall for a highly anticipated solo recital, performing Mozart’s playful Rondo along with two of Beethoven’s most beloved piano sonatas: the “Pathétique” and his emotionally charged penultimate sonata. After intermission, Lang Lang invites audiences on a romantic getaway to Spain via Albéniz’s flamenco-flavored Suite española as well as the chivalrous yet somber “Quejas” from Goyescas, Granados’ collection of pieces inspired by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. Lang Lang closes out the recital with two works by his personal piano hero Franz Liszt: the lightning-fast “Tarantella” and the deeply moving Consolation No. 2—the piece Lang Lang describes as “a whispered prayer that suddenly opens up into something universal.”

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake bursts with unflinching beauty, passion and drama that is known the world over. But when Elim Chan performed a version of the suite in San Francisco last year that she compiled herself and structured almost like a symphony, critics praised her ability to transform the familiar into something both new and timeless. With the ability to “bring out the best in a top-rank orchestra” and a presence that is “as communicative as a dancer,” the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that Chan shaped Tchaikovsky “as if she were born to conduct ballet,” making her performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic a can’t-miss occasion.

Like Swan Lake, Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto exudes unapologetic Romantic indulgence—though with more of Liszt’s trademark showmanship and musical fireworks. Yefim Bronfman performed the concerto at age 15 in an audition that helped catapult his career. Since then, Bronfman has shown an uncommon attunement for the piece’s technical and artistic challenges, leading Bachtrack to say Liszt’s “manic, head-banging moments...were delivered with punch and flair, but it was the poetry [Bronfman] found in the concerto’s opening sections which made one listen with new ears.”

Mendelssohn & Brahms

Featuring restless arpeggios, furious tremolos and a passage of warm, hymn-like chords, Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 is a challenge for its performers and a delight for its listeners. Even the composer admitted it’s “a trifle nasty to play!” Two violins, two violas and two cellos combine for the second half of the program. Brahms’ dark but beautiful String Sextet No. 2 was written in the years following a failed relationship and captures love’s moments of sunshine and sorrow. The composer later confided to a friend, “Here I have freed myself from my last love.”

Elim Chan leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two enchanting and colorful orchestral favorites. Debussy’s hues in Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun are otherworldly if hazy and in watercolor. The Impressionistic atmosphere Debussy conjures exudes a fragile beauty that set off a revolution, which Pierre Boulez said “breathed new air into the art of music.” By contrast, Stravinsky paints with bold, contrasting blocks of sound. Petrushka’s Picasso-esque approach to musical color and movement sets the stage for the story of a mischievous puppet, packed with Russian folklore and misadventure. In between, Karen Gomyo—who has been described as “a first-rate artist of real musical command, vitality, brilliance, and intensity” by the Chicago Tribune—gives the world premiere of Samuel Adams’ Violin Concerto. The two combined for the premiere of Adams’ “mesmerizing, soulful” (The Independent) Chamber Concerto in 2018. The son of LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams, Samuel Adams writes in a musical style that combines his own background as a jazz bassist with his interest in European modernism and acoustic-digital sounds.

Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and its brilliant music director Rafael Payare step onto The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall stage with Shostakovich’s powerful, energetic and darkly intense Tenth Symphony. Following a performance of Shostakovich’s 10^th on Montréal’s 2022 tour, Bachtrack wrote that “Payare’s twitchy baton...dug into the work’s spirit of grim survival against adversity. It was composed in the wake of Stalin’s death, the ferocious second movement often described as a musical portrait of the dictator. Payare took it at a lightning lick, a bundle of energy on the podium.” Samy Moussa’s otherworldly and mythological Elysium opens the program, followed by one of the most treasured violin concertos of all time performed by Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos—whose “talent dazzles from the first notes” (Bachtrack).

Composer/conductor Teddy Abrams, “a maestro of the people” (The New York Times), and violin virtuoso Ray Chen survey more than a century of American symphonic music, from Charles Ives’ early 20^th-century depiction of his native New England to the world premiere of Abrams contemporary stateside take on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The Grammy®-winning Abrams wrote the American Four Seasons specifically for Chen, known for “both his ability to spin out huge musical lines of thought and the strong-boned, penetrating, caramel-toned passion of his sound” (Gramophone). Julia Perry ingeniously condensed the breadth of the orchestral palette into less than 10 minutes in her Short Piece for Orchestra, which kicks off the program, and George Gershwin’s “rhapsodic ballet” An American in Paris closes with the energy and coquettishness of a visit to the “City of Light.”

Academy Award®-winning composer and director Michael Giacchino brings a Halloween doubleheader to The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall stage! The night kicks off with an exciting first look at Headless, a new musical from Giacchino and collaborators Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson. Inspired by Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Headless lures audiences into the bewitched town that has captivated audiences for over two hundred years, but this tale has a twist. Following intermission, the orchestra performs the score of Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night live to picture under the baton of Sarah Hicks. Called a “full-on endorphin rush for horror nerds,” Werewolf by Night follows a secret cabal of monster hunters thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic that will bring them face-to-face with more than one monster. Inspired by the Gothic-style horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, the chilling special brings Marvel’s horror comics history to life with style and suspense.

Leif Ove Andsnes calls Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto “glorious and happy music” that sets soloist and orchestra in a perfectly balanced dialogue. Despite its fiendish technical difficulty and symphony-like scale, Brahms’ Second doesn’t wear its heart on its sleeve but instead glows with carefully crafted elegance—especially in Andsnes’ capable hands that “[blend] intimacy and bravura” in the piece (Chicago Classical Review). The concert begins with the colorful, jazz-infused Latest by Paris-based composer Betsy Jolas, who turns 100 years old in 2026. Aptly titled, this percussive piece is one of Jolas’ more recent works, but certainly not her last. “Old age has fortunately not diminished my curiosity,” she says. “I’m still learning, and I’m still trying things I’ve never done before.”

The 13-time Latin Grammy® winner won an Oscar® in 2005 for his song “Al Otro Lado Del Río,” from The Motorcycle Diaries. He sings softly, evoking vulnerability, hope and wistfulness, with one eye trained on the cosmos. Rolling Stone says, “Something about the artist—maybe his narrative approach to songwriting or his nomadic explorations of Latin American folk sounds—has always made him feel like a living troubadour in the present day” and calls his 2022 album Tinta y Tiempo “a stirring ode to love and human connection” at the time. See him share songs of wonder and wisdom from across his three-decade career.

Ravel expert Gustavo Gimeno taps into his Hispanic heritage and love for the French composer during a special night of romance, Spanish and Mexican rhythms and more. On one half of the program, Gimeno pairs the dream-like melodies and triumphant buildup of Daphnis et Chloé and Rapsodie espagnole. With a “healthy dose of Iberian blood, sweat, and sexiness…Gimeno [is] the perfect guide through the hypnotic haze” (Bachtrack). On the other half, Venezuelan trumpet wizard Pacho Flores returns to the LA Phil with Altar de Bronce, a concerto “tailor made” for him by Grammy®-winning composer Gabriela Ortiz. While the piece is noted for its tension, drama and opportunities to improvise, Bachtrack writes that it’s “the infectious dance rhythms of popular Mexican bands that [come] to the fore, Flores swaying along with the music.” Gimeno and the orchestra kick off the concert with a bang, eliciting the bewitching flamenco flair of Falla’s El amor brujo.

On two select Sundays, house music fans and dance lovers can let the summer vibes flow freely with live DJs, a 21+ beer garden, a vibrant marketplace of local artisans and more on July 19 and August 16, 2026, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday Sessions is the ultimate summer destination to connect and dance with other Angelenos under the DTLA skyline and celebrate The Music Center’s joyful “Summer of Dance.” The history of house music can be traced back to an era when marginalized communities gathered not only to dance, but also to provide mutual support and find solace during tumultuous times. The dance floor was a blueprint for shared resources and lasting wellbeing; this year’s Sunday Sessions will continue that spirit.

DJ collective Baile World headlines the July 19, 2026, edition of Sunday Sessions and showcases a genre-blending lineup where global rhythms converge on the open-air dance lawn. L.A. native DJ CQUESTT founded Baile World—touted by the Los Angeles Times as a party movement that will “take you to another part of the world”—to create an energizing space where culture and music converge. Joining DJ CQUESTT on the turntables will be Josh Peace, Spiñorita and headlining Bronx-based duo Dos Flakos. Rooted in their Dominican heritage and New York edge, Dos Flakos—comprised of brothers Chris and Rich—is at the forefront of the Latin House and Tribal House movement, delivering diaspora-inspired edits and electrifying remixes that weave Caribbean influences from reggaeton and dancehall directly into the house music tradition.

The August 16, 2026, edition of Sunday Sessions celebrates the foundational Black and LGBTQIA+ roots of house music curated by L.A.-based DJ and producer Terrell Brooke of TheyHouse, a premier DJ crew highlighting the genre’s history and current pulse. The lineup features local favorites—BLKshine, Packrat and NRS LNDSY—spinning a mix of rare Chicago house, acid tracks and Deep House classics. The internationally acclaimed, New York-based duo The Illustrious Blacks headlines the afternoon. Renowned for their “Afro-Electro-Disco-Space-Punk” style and releases on Defected Records, the dynamic real-life couple (Monstah Black and Manchildblack) fuses funk, techno and disco into a high-energy performance that brings a brilliant celebration of ballroom-inspired, soulful house tracks to “the park for everyone.”

While enjoying the global grooves at Gloria Molina Grand Park, guests of all ages can shop for unique items and gifts made by local artisans and small businesses at The Maker’s Market as well as create their own amazing arts and crafts. For a refreshing interlude, the park’s splash pad provides the perfect respite to cool off and recharge before the next dance set.

The Music Center hosts a free Watch Party in Downtown L.A. featuring the Spain v. Uruguay global soccer matchup. Angelenos and soccer fans of all ages are invited to cheer for their favorite team as the game appears on the big LED screens outdoors on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center. During the match, guests can enjoy soccer-inspired artmaking activities, such as refashioning jerseys and mask- and flag-making. There’s also a photo booth to capture the fun memories!

Guests are welcome to bring a picnic dinner or purchase eats and treats with a variety of food and drink options available at The Music Center. No outside alcohol is permitted.

After the final whistle, the celebration continues with a free global dance party, kicking off the 22^nd season of The Music Center’s Dance DTLA. Los Mirlos to Headline "Live at The Music Center"

Los Mirlos will headline the fifth annual Live at The Music Center, a free summer concert open to all on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center in Downtown L.A. As the founding architects of cumbia amazónica and one of the most storied bands in Latin American music history, Los Mirlos will play under the summer sky on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 8:00 P.M.

The announcement marks a historic convergence. Los Mirlos, 53 years into a career that invented a genre and quietly shaped a cadre of artists worldwide, takes one of Los Angeles' most beloved outdoor stages just weeks after the global release of its landmark collaborative album THE WORLD MEETS LOS MIRLOS (Revancha Records / BMG, May 15, 2026). It is the kind of moment Los Angeles was made for, with communities as musically and culturally diverse as the band itself, gathering freely under the summer sky. For those discovering Los Mirlos for the first time, Live at The Music Center is the perfect opportunity to experience the acclaimed band at no cost and become lifetime fans.

Los Mirlos was born in the Peruvian Amazon in 1973, when founder Jorge Rodríguez Grández brought together electric guitar, Andean pentatonic melody, Afro-Caribbean percussion, and the psychedelic spirit of the jungle into something the world had never heard. They called it cumbia amazónica. Over the next five decades, cumbia amazónica would travel the world.

In 2025, Los Mirlos became the first Peruvian band to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. In 2026, Peru's Ministry of Culture recognized the group as a Personalidad Meritoria de la Cultura. And, on May 15, 2026, Los Mirlos released THE WORLD MEETS LOS MIRLOS—the first collaborative album in the band’s history, featuring 12 tracks with Juanes, Bomba Estéreo, 311, Guaynaa, Los Bunkers, Monsieur Periné, Los Bitchos, LA LOM, Chicha Libre, La Coreañera, Mireya Ramos, Funky Munchies, Big Sempa, and Toy Selectah.

The band’s Live at The Music Center performance on August 15, 2026, brings this historic moment to Los Angeles—a place whose own Latin American communities have long known what the world is only now discovering.

Live at The Music Center is a free annual outdoor concert held on Jerry Moss Plaza — a stunning 35,000-square-foot outdoor urban oasis at the heart of The Music Center's 22-acre campus in Downtown L.A., with views of Gloria Molina Grand Park and L.A. City Hall.

The concert is generously supported by the Moss Foundation. Gloria Molina Grand Park invites Angelenos and visitors of all ages this July 4^th to experience the strength and solidarity that define L.A. at Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party on Saturday, July 4, from 4:00 – 9:30 p.m. Taking place for the 13^th consecutive year in the heart of Downtown L.A., the free, bold and high-energy gathering will transform “the park for everyone” into a vibrant platform for expression, creativity and civic connection packed with two stages of homegrown musical talent, interactive art exhibits, community organizations and more than two dozen food trucks to whet everyone’s appetite. The West Coast’s largest free 4^th of July celebration will culminate with the park’s signature drone show destined to dazzle and unite the massive crowd.

With the 250^th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as a powerful backdrop, Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party carries forward this milestone through the theme “Voice and Expression as Power.” It’s a reminder that America’s story is one of origins, struggle and the ongoing work of collective change. Parkgoers will discover and appreciate what makes L.A. unique, beautiful and strong—thanks to the brave actions of individuals who shaped L.A.’s history and those who continue to advance L.A.’s values.

Music drives the energy of this year’s block party, with a dynamic lineup of artists and DJs who reflect L.A.’s global rhythms and creative richness. The Backyard Stage (located directly in front of L.A. City Hall) spotlights bold local performers, including star trumpeter Tatiana Tate, who went viral recently when she serenaded Dodgers player Edwin Diaz with a blaring and electrifying rendition of Diaz’s iconic entrance song “Narco” when he made his debut on the mound; L.A. Tropifunk Collective, bringing its fiery Afro-Latin sounds—for one night only—with members of Jungle Fire and Ethiocali; and Kaimera whose contemporary dance works, blending cirque-like theater, street dance and cultural storytelling, will inspire audiences through movement and shared experience. Acclaimed L.A. DJ Anthony Valadez will host and keep the vibes going at The Backyard Stage.

At The Front Yard Stage, between Olive Court and Hill Street, the global sound DJ collective Pangea Sound will transform the park grounds into an open-air dance floor with a fusion of Caribbean, African and Latin American sounds that will pulsate with L.A.’s spirit and bring revelers to their feet all night long.

“As we celebrate a ‘summer of dance’ throughout The Music Center campus, the global rhythms at Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party will bring Los Angeles to life,” said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of The Music Center. “We uplift music and movement as acts of connection and civic expression to spark joy and to build bridges across L.A.’s diverse cultures and communities. Join us for a summer block party where everyone is invited to step in, speak out, move and be moved.”

The centerpiece of this year’s block party is interactive art with several participatory installations by L.A. artists. The Latinx Freedom Movement Archive and Exhibition Project, curated by Consuelo G. Flores, highlights the Latino community’s pivotal contributions to the civil rights movement of the 1960s and ‘70s through photographs, archival materials and storytelling. The installation, which includes an audio tour mapped throughout the park, connects past struggles for civil rights with present-day conversations around identity, justice and belonging. Parkgoers can also experience MURMURATIONS, an AR experience created by EyeJack and For Freedoms in response to the Declaration of Independence’s momentous anniversary. Using an app, this innovative project encourages participants to listen, reflect, and contribute their lived experiences as Angelenos and their hopes for L.A.’s future. Their stories, some of which will be recorded onsite at the park, is a shared call for care, belonging and the rights of families and communities to stay whole.

In partnership with Statloba for Good, Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party also will feature a Community Sports & Health Zone, offering wellness resources and sports activations. From timeless masterworks to boundary-pushing new choreography, The Music Center announced today a spectacular lineup for the 2026–2027 dance season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. In June 2027, audiences of all ages will enter a world of enchantment with The Joffrey Ballet in the West Coast Premiere of The Sleeping Beauty, spectacularly reimagined by two-time Tony Award® winner Christopher Wheeldon, OBE, and performed by one of the world’s premier dance companies alongside a live orchestra. The classic fairy tale follows Princess Aurora, whose joyous christening is cursed by the wicked Carabosse and dooms the princess to fall into a deep sleep on her sixteenth birthday. After 20 years, Spain’s acclaimed Compañía Nacional de Danza returns to The Music Center in July 2027 and closes the season with the thrilling North American debut of Don Quixote. Based on Miguel de Cervantes’ legendary tale of an idealistic knight daring to dream the impossible dream, this joyful ballet bursts with dazzling technique, humor and flair. Abernethy’s At The Music Center Names Chef Andy Allo As Next Emerging Chef-in-Residence

Abernethy’s at The Music Center is excited to announce its latest Emerging Chef-in-Residence, Chef Andy Allo. Known for her Cameroonian cuisine, Chef Allo brings bold flavors that honor her heritage and seamlessly blend culture and culinary artistry. Her residency begins on May 20, 2026, at L.A.'s performing arts center in Downtown Los Angeles. Most recently a contestant on “Next Level Chef,” Chef Allo has held rigorous culinary apprenticeships and staging roles at Michelin-starred restaurants, including Alinea in Chicago and Akoko in London. She also recently hosted a local pop-up, Akone by Chef Allo, which quickly gained buzz and sold out.

Located on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center, Abernethy’s celebrates chefs from across Los Angeles County, showcasing a rich diversity of flavors and talent through its Emerging Chef program. Each residency brings a new perspective, telling Los Angeles’ unique multi-cultural story through food. Chef Allo joins Abernethy’s as the 12^thEmerging Chef since the restaurant opened in 2019.

“Bringing Cameroonian flavors to the heart of Downtown Los Angeles feels like a full-circle moment for me,” said Chef Allo. “My cooking is rooted in heritage but shaped by my experiences around the world, and this residency gives me the chance to share that story in a place that truly embraces bold, diverse cuisine. I can’t wait for guests to taste, explore and hopefully fall in love with these flavors the way I did growing up.”

While Chef Allo’s menu will focus on flavors complemented by the seasons, every dish is designed to feel like a comforting taste of home, regardless of one’s familiarity with Cameroonian cuisine. Starter highlights include Puff Puff Donuts (red bean dip, avocado crema and cilantro oil) and Koki Duo (black-eyed peas and sweet corn wrapped in banana leaves, also referred to as a Cameroonian tamale). Main courses feature Grilled Branzino Filet (with leek and njansa sauce, cassava fries and sautéed spinach), along with Roasted Chicken and Peanut Stew (served over Basmati rice and boiled ripe plantains). For dessert, guests can dig into can’t-miss treats like Hibiscus-Lemon Ice Cream (topped with toasted digestive cookie crumble) or Malta Granita (vanilla frozen mascarpone). With every dish comes an option to try beverages that complement the meal from Abernethy’s lineup of artisanal cocktails inspired by tastes of Cameroon, along with a curated list of wines.

From an early age, Chef Allo developed an appreciation for bold, vibrant flavors, which now define her mission to create incredible dining experiences that celebrate her heritage. A multidisciplinary artist, she first built a successful career as an actor and musician, where she honed her storytelling abilities. The Music Center Appoints Julia Diamond to Lead Artistic and Programming Division TMC Arts

The Music Center announced today the appointment of Julia Diamond to senior vice president of TMC Arts, the performing arts organization’s programming division. Diamond, who has been serving as interim head of TMC Arts since 2025, assumed the permanent role effective April 27, 2026. She previously served as vice president, TMC Arts, a role created in 2023 to advance the internal systems and infrastructure necessary to support the growth and development of a cohesive programming arm for The Music Center. Diamond succeeds Josephine Ramirez, who led the TMC Arts division from 2019–2025.

In her new role, Diamond continues, among other duties, to oversee a $14 million annual operating budget that includes resources for programming, production and measurement systems. She leads a team of 30 full-time and over 200 part-time staff (union and non-union) across seven departments and guides the artistic and strategic vision for TMC Arts’ robust slate of programs and initiatives that include The Music Center’s numerous dance and dancing programs such as Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center and The Music Center’s Dance DTLA; education programs including The Music Center’s Spotlight; The Music Center’s Digital Innovation Initiative; and The Music Center’s free programs including those presented by TMC Arts in both Gloria Molina Grand Park and on Jerry Moss Plaza. She will continue advancing TMC Arts’ partnerships with Los Angeles-based arts and community organizations and work with The Music Center’s resident companies (Center Theatre Group, LA Opera, LA Phil and the Los Angeles Master Chorale) to identify opportunities for programming, particularly in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Diamond originally joined The Music Center 14 years ago as the founding director of programming for Grand Park—now known as Gloria Molina Grand Park—shortly after the park’s opening in 2012. From 2017–2023, she served as both interim director and then director of “the park for everyone.”

“Julia is an exceptional leader whose vision, integrity and deep commitment to the arts make her uniquely suited for this role. Following a national search, it became clear that the strongest candidate to lead TMC Arts into its next chapter was already within our organization,” said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of The Music Center. “Julia brings a rare combination of artistic fluency, strategic rigor and meaningful relationships across the cultural sector. I am confident that under her leadership, TMC Arts will continue to expand its impact by bringing dynamic, inclusive and inspiring experiences to Angelenos and global visitors alike.”

Earlier in her career, Diamond held key artistic and administrative roles across L.A.’s performing arts landscape, including managing director of the Los Angeles Dance Project and artistic planning coordinator for LA Opera. During her tenure at LA Opera, she served as a principal liaison for the company’s landmark production of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Achim Freyer, and contributed to the citywide RING Festival LA 2010. She began her career in stage management, working across the United States, France and Germany on contemporary theatre and opera productions presented at international festivals in cities such as Washington D.C., Berlin and Hong Kong.

“It is both an honor and a tremendous responsibility to continue shaping the artistic vision of The Music Center at such a pivotal time,” said Diamond. “This role represents a full-circle moment in my career, and I am deeply committed to advancing our work that reflects the breadth, creativity and spirit of Los Angeles. The power of the performing arts to inspire, connect and uplift communities is what drives me, and I look forward to building on The Music Center’s legacy while expanding access and opportunity for all Angelenos.”

Diamond currently serves as co-chair of The Music Center’s employee resource network W.I.S.E. (Women Inspiring Success and Excellence). She has held advisory and leadership roles with numerous arts organizations, including California Presenters, the Cultural Equity and Inclusion Initiative of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Dance Resource Center of Greater Los Angeles, Ford Theatres Connectors Council and the Arts for LA. She has also served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the Pasadena Arts Council.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from Columbia University. Diamond is an alumnus of the Southern California Leadership Network’s Leadership L.A. program and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles’ Rautenberg New Leaders Project.

Dance moves to the forefront at The Music Center from June through August with an exciting range of performances and participatory experiences that invite audiences not just to watch, but to join in. Digital Arts Space at The Music Center

The Digital Arts Space at The Music Center invites Angelenos and visitors to create their own digital art related to nature and the building blocks of life. Developed by Taiwanese artist Chi Po-Hao and Zone Sound Creative, The Music Center Presents Life in Motion depicts a series of unique scenes that explore the beauty, complexity and interconnectedness of life. Participants, for example, can gather particles in space, shift landscapes of mountains and rivers, draw musical scores and more—all powered by their own movements and hand gestures—depicted on screens.

Armed with enchanted bells and a magic flute, Prince Tamino sets off, bound and determine to rescue his lady love, the Princess Pamina—only to find that things aren’t what they seem. The Queen of the Night, who sent him on his quest, just might be plotting his doom instead. James Conlon ends his legendary tenue as LA Opera music director with the world’s most popular opera, The Magic Flute. Miles Mykkanen makes his LA Opera debut as Prince Tamino opposite Sydney Mancasola as the beautiful Pamina. Sounds of France

Flutist and composer André Jolivet was the kind of musician who strictly avoided conformity and advocated for music that makes us feel “human.” Pairing the flute with a quartet of percussionists, he aimed to highlight the instruments closest to the “primal” senses and origin of music in his 1965 suite.

Fauré’s E-minor String Quartet represents another aspect of humanity—death. Written just a month before he passed (and while he was completely deaf), the piece is as genius and complex as it is brooding and evocative, featuring an Andante movement, which his biographer said “bathes in a supernatural light” from beginning to end.

Performed before and after the intermission in Sounds of France are works by Vincent d’Indy and Marcel Tournier, respectively. D’Indy’s soothing and spirited song for woodwinds meets Tournier’s astounding and elaborate harp sonata.

Yo-Yo Ma “is a musician of immense conscience, a wholeheartedly earnest presence who tends to bring out the best in whatever company he is in” (The New York Times). Sharing the stage with Gustavo Dudamel, Ma brings his sensitive playing to the world-premiere performances of an underwater field recordings-inspired concerto by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón. The collaboration between Negrón and Ma sparked from an experiential creative workshop Negrón facilitated with Ma and the Billion Oyster Project in New York City.

Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is no exception as it closely follows the composer’s own real-life conflicts, resolutions and romances along the way through its bold battle music, soaring melodies and passionate spirit. Join Gustavo Dudamel in Strauss and More with Dudamel as he conducts Strauss’ heroic journey for the first time in Los Angeles after the LA Phil performs a brand-new orchestral piece by Roberto Sierra, the Puerto Rican composer known for his unique fusion of European modernism and Latin American folk elements called “tropicalization.”

Gustavo Dudamel honors his Venezuelan and American identities, presiding over two poetry-inspired choral symphonic works in his final program at The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall as music & artistic director. At times hushed and mysterious and at others pulsating and ecstatic, Harmonium was a breakthrough for John Adams’ compositional voice. Borrowing texts from Emily Dickinson and John Donne, Adams explores time, harmony and rhythm, unraveling gentle meditations into an awe-inspiring swirl of sound.

In the second half, Dudamel guides Cantata Criolla, another breakthrough work that is not just definitive of composer Antonio Estévez’ voice but an emerging national Venezuelan style. Driven by his belief that music can build bridges between cultures, Dudamel selected the cantata as one of the first pieces he wanted to bring to Los Angeles in his inaugural season as music director, and it fittingly sets the stage for his finale concert of the 2025/26 season.

LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE

Sound Waves: The Music of Esmail, Garrett and Woo
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall

Sound Waves delivers a rare escape from the world’s noise with three spectacular immersive meditations on humans’ delicate relationship with water and nature. Korean composer Hyowon Woo’s powerful SUM immerses the audience in a transcendent “soundbath for the soul,” where 62 voices are spread throughout The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall surrounding the audience, interweaving with Korean percussion and resonant singing bowls to create an atmosphere of vibration. Rooted in the restorative power of sound and breath, this spatially dynamic experience invites guests to “be selfish” for a moment—surrendering to melodic currents that renew body and mind.

On the Seashore, by American composer Marques L. A. Garrett, unfolds as voices rise and recede like waves—cascading in a surge that crests in a breathtaking sonic climax. Garrett set his music to a 1912 poem by Rabindranath Tagore, reflecting children's innocence in an endangered, ever-changing world.

In Hindustani music, Malhaar (A Requiem for Water) refers to a family of raags that beckon rain. As drought worsened in Southern California, Indian American composer Reena Esmail was inspired by the legend that the greatest musicians could cause a downpour performing this raag. With Malhaar (A Requiem for Water), Esmail unlocks the power of music to heal and nourish. The great Hindustani singer Saili Oak, along with internationally renowned tabla player Abhimam Kaushal, create the underlying pulse and melodies that will vibrate through The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, as an immersive video installation by Camilla Tassi transforms the space into a cocoon of light and motion.
