Rodolfo is a struggling poet burning his manuscripts to keep out the winter chill. Mimi is a fellow tenant with big dreams and a deadly illness. A chance meeting has them falling in love, but when you are at the bottom of Parisian society, every day could be your last. Puccini’s blockbuster opera returns to The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage starring Janai Brugger as the sweet but suffering Mimi and Oresto Cosimo as the lovestruck Rodolfo, with Gihoon Kim and Erica Petrocelli as the on-again-off-again lovers Marcello and Musetta. Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados leads Puccini’s transcendent score, awash in lavish Romanticism and gorgeous melodies. Director Brenna Corner helms a timeless production from Herbert Ross that the Los Angeles Times calls a “warm, nostalgic evocation of Paris in Puccini’s time.” - Monday, December 1, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Ellington’s Nutcracker & Tchaikovsky’s Winter Daydreams presented by the LA Phil
The Music Center's Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles 90012
Los Angeles favorite Thomas Wilkins returns to The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall for a holiday-inflected program. In 1960, Duke Ellington merged the Tchaikovsky ballet with his own aesthetic, transforming the Sugar Plum Fairy into Sugar Rum Cherry and “The Dance of the Reed-Pipes” into “Toot Toot Tootsie Toot,” creating an instant American classic with his spin on the Russian chestnut. However, Tchaikovsky gets his full due with his enchanting First Symphony, which the composer lovingly called “a sin of my sweet youth.” From its chilly opening along a winter journey and through misty landscapes, the composer eventually arrives in a spring filled with the blooms of flowers and young love. In between, Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances takes off on a wildly clever and musically rich ride through African American history that The Washington Post described as “a testament to his talent as one of the most dynamic composers going.”
